This Summer’s Hottest Blonde Is Here To Stay

Forget bright, freshly highlighted blonde: this season, things are getting a little more undone. Enter barn girl blonde, the muted, sandy shade inspired by the countryside – think softly blended roots, a slightly matte finish and the kind of lived-in colour that looks better for being a little imperfect.
The reference point is Sarah Jessica Parker post-Sex and the City: grown-out, expensive-looking blonde that doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard. Bella Hadid, Julia Roberts, Rihanna and Lily-Rose Depp have also all embraced variations on the look, while similarly understated, natural-looking colour has been cropping up across the runways.
As our colourist Nicole explains, the key is that nothing looks overly bleached or freshly “done”. Roots are soft, tones are sandy rather than icy and there’s plenty of natural dimension running through the lengths. It’s romantic, youthful and undone – essentially quiet luxury hair with a countryside streak.
And because barn girl blonde isn’t about bleaching the hair into oblivion, the finish is everything. Keep it soft, healthy and touchable, with natural movement rather than a super-polished blow-dry.
