This Is How Often You Should Wash Your Hair

“How often should you wash your hair?” It might seem like a simple question with a similarly straightforward answer, but with Google searches for the term up 130% in the last month and our clients often asking the same question in salon, it seems many of us are confused about what we should really be doing when washing our hair at home.

The truth is that how often you wash your hair all depends upon your hair type and scalp health, as well as your lifestyle. For example, if you’re someone with curly or coily hair, the likelihood is that you’ll need to wash it less – 4A and 4B textured hair types are drier than the those with straighter 1B and 1C hair so washing too often harms hair health. If you’re someone with thick 4B hair, you may only need to wash it every one to two weeks.

Those with straighter hair types should gauge their wash pattern based on how oily their scalp gets, how much product they use and what they’re doing day to day. If you’re going to the gym every day, a daily wash is perfectly fine to remove sweat and grime. Those living in cities should consider washing their hair every one to two days due to accumulated pollution on the hair and scalp, which can cause dullness and impact hair health. But generally, keep an eye on your scalp and hair at the roots – when they become itchy, flaky or heavy, it’s a good time to wash your hair.

Contrary to popular belief, those who suffer from dandruff should actually try and wash their hair more often to remove flake build-up and keep the scalp clear, which will prevent discomfort and more flaking. Just like the skin on our faces, the scalp needs to be regularly cleansed to look clear and work well, so don’t be afraid to wash as often as you need to keep it feeling fresh and balanced.

After your hair is washed, use conditioner through mid-lengths and ends, and for a weekly nourishing treat, use a hydrating mask all over, from root to tip. Your hair and scalp will thank you.
