How To Use A Diffuser (Properly)

The diffuser is often the most mysterious attachment that accompanies a hair dryer – but once you know how to use it, it can be a total game-changer. Designed to distribute airflow more evenly, a diffuser helps enhance natural waves and curls while reducing frizz. It works best for curly, wavy and textured hair types – but can also add soft, lived-in movement to straighter hair. The trick is knowing how to make it work for your style rather than against it.

Start with damp hair

Apply a lightweight styling cream or curl enhancer, like Almost Everything Cream, to damp hair. This helps define your natural texture and keeps frizz at bay. For curls, make sure your hair is detangled and scrunched gently before you begin.

Keep the heat and speed low

Diffusers are all about gentle drying. Use a low heat setting to avoid disrupting your curl pattern, and a low airflow to minimise frizz. High heat or speed can cause unwanted fluffiness.

Use the Sock Diffuser for maximum ease

Our new Sock Diffuser is a soft, flexible alternative to the traditional hard bowl, simply slip it over your hairdryer nozzle and use it to form any look you can think of. Since it blunts air flow but keeps the heat, it’s a new-gen take on a classic, helping to create effortless texture without the frizz.

Don’t over-dry

Stop diffusing when your hair is around 80–90 per cent dry. Letting it finish drying naturally helps curls set without frizz. Once dry, resist the urge to touch your hair too much – this keeps the curl definition intact.

Once you get the hang of it, a diffuser is one of the simplest ways to enhance your natural texture. And with the right technique, you can go from mysterious attachment to your favourite hair tool in just one styling session.
