HOW TO GET A BIG, BOUNCY BLOW DRY AT HOME

As much as we enjoy an easy-breezy, air dry and go kinda day, we have to admit that we love a big, bouncy, all-guns-blazing blowout too.

And, whether it’s because hair has been low key of late; or because we’re finally ready to go out-out, the full-on statement blow dry is well and truly back. In fact, for the July/August issue of Vanity Fair magazine, Luke Hersheson styled cover star Dua Lipa, creating va-va-voom volume and killer movement.

“This is the perfect moment to pick up your hairdryer and go all-out with your blow dry. The look takes its cue from the ‘90s supermodels – so it feels super empowering,” says Luke.

Where home blow dries go wrong

The idea of a salon-worthy blow dry at home sounds great – in theory. In practice, we all know that a lot can go wrong. It takes too long (who has that kind of time?), your dryer is too heavy (no one wants a dead arm for the sake of their hair) – then it all falls flat about two minutes after you leave the house.

How to perfect your blow dry

First things first: picture the look you’re aiming for. When he created Dua Lipa’s look, Luke took references of Amazonian ‘90s supermodels – think Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen and Tatjana Patitz. The look is big, bold power hair that gives you a confident, conquer-the-world kind of feeling.

Next, make it your own:

“Remember that a home blow dry doesn’t need to be perfect. Focus on the parts that are going to make the biggest impact – namely around your face. If you don’t have time to go all the way, even accentuating the shape and movement around your face will make a huge difference,” says Luke.

Mega volume and movement in 5 steps

✓ Apply TIGI Bed Head Queen For A Day thickening spray to wet hair. This creates the foundation for lasting volume – so your style doesn’t fall flat when you leave the house.

✓ Take a medium-sized section, wrap it around our Pro Blow Dry Brush – and apply heat from your hairdryer. Wind this section around a roller and clip it in place. Leave it to cool and set. Then repeat for the rest of your hair – focusing on the front and top sections to speed things up.

✓ Use the Everyday Essentials Brush to brush your hair out. This creates softness while adding width and height. You can use the same brush to back-brush the roots – particularly at the crown – for that full-on power look. Flip your hair upside down and back again if you want even more volume and bounce.

✓ Rub a pump of Almost Everything Cream between your hands. Use your palms to gently smooth any flyaways or frizz.

✓ Apply lashings of L’Oréal Paris Elnett hairspray. This is what will give your blow dry serious staying power. Just keep the nozzle about 30cm away from your hair as you apply it to avoid any stickiness or crunching. Then get ready to take your hair out-out.
