How Luke Created Maya Rudolph’s Sleek ‘90s Waves

When Maya Rudolph arrived with Luke to get ready ahead of the BAFTAs a few weeks ago, they decided on a minimal yet polished style that nodded to the clean, pared-back glamour of the ’90s. Sleek through the lengths with a subtle bend, it’s a style with universal appeal.

“Maya has naturally 4C hair, so I soaked it in Almost Everything Cream when it was wet and then blow-dried section by section with a Hersheson’s large brush and The Great Hairdryer,” Luke explains.

Working methodically through the hair allowed him to smooth her natural texture while keeping the finish soft and healthy-looking.

Once the blow-dry was complete, Luke added movement through the lengths to stop the look from feeling overly flat. “I went through with the new Hershesons Great Iron and created a subtle wave throughout the mid-lengths and ends, so it didn’t feel flat and had some character to it,” he says.

With the texture in place, the final shape was all about precision and restraint. “I drew a centre parting and tied the front of her hair tightly under the nape of her neck to give a 90s minimal feeling.”
