HOW TO CONTOUR YOUR FACE WITH YOUR HAIRCUT

If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll know that we think getting Great Hair all comes down to a Great Cut. And a Great Cut works by framing your face in the right way.

But, how do you know what to ask for?

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY THE RIGHT CUT ‘FRAMING YOUR FACE’?

Think of it like framing a photo – or a piece of art. The design of the frame enhances your best bits – and tones down those niggly things you’d rather not shine a light on. Often, this means adding shape to your haircut by cutting slightly shorter pieces around your face that hit at the right height and, in doing so, enhance your eyes or help define your jawline, perhaps. The cut does the hard work for you, so styling it with these clips using some Almost Everything Cream and our signature Pinch technique takes just a few minutes.

HOW TO FRAME YOUR FACE WITH LONG HAIR

Sometimes, long straight hair can work beautifully (see Demi Moore and Avril Levigne). But it’s also pretty shapeless so can be unforgiving and have the effect of ‘dragging’ your facial features down. By breaking the length up with some shorter pieces around the face or a long, grown-out fringe, we can make the hair sweep out over the forehead to frame the eyes and have sections that curve around the ears to accentuate your cheekbones. For bonus points, we like to create a little root lift at the parting and crown to really enhance the shape of your cut and cheekbones. Simply rub Zhoosh Foam into the roots until it disappears to create that lift. To take your contour next–level, pair this round brush with the Great Hairdryer and again, follow the Pinch technique, to create a beautiful ‘S’ shape around your cheekbones.

WHAT ABOUT SHORTER STYLES?

By definition, Bobs and Pixie cuts are a more definitive frame. They work by exposing the face to allow your best bits to shine. As ever, shape is everything here. So, we often add a very slight angle to the front section of your bob, allowing it to slope down your jawline to really enhance your bone structure. Smoothing a smidgen of Almost Everything Cream over any frizzy or dry bits will help keep the shape of your cut and face contour on point.

WHAT TO DO WITH CURLY OR AFRO HAIR?

One size doesn’t fit all. But, when it comes to curly or afro hair, we believe in working with your natural texture (rather than battling it with straighteners). For this reason, we often create a rounder frame to showcase the centre part of your face – namely your eyes and cheeks. Simply twist Zhoosh, our No 1 curl–defining cream, into the lengths, then air dry and go.

WHY FRINGES ARE THE ULTIMATE FRAMER

We think there’s a fringe for everyone. Whether it be a ‘70s fringe or curtain bangs, we love to reference our ultimate fringe icons, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, to create a length that’s tailored to your face shape and forehead. A fringe literally sits above and around your eyes to make them the star of the show.

IS A FACE-FRAMING CUT HIGH MAINTENANCE?

Quite the reverse. A Great Cut should always grow out looking effortless and natural – and even get better over time. If the cut feels contrived and is a nightmare to grow out, you know something’s not right and it’s time to consult an expert stylist.
