Big Hair Energy: Why Brushed-Out Curls Are Back

Big Hair Energy: Why Brushed-Out Curls Are Back

Forget perfectly defined curls – the coolest way to wear your hair right now is big, bouncy and beautifully brushed out. Just look at Olivia Dean, whose voluminous, floaty curls have become something of a signature, or Chappell Roan and Chase Infiniti, who have both been embracing soft, fluffy texture. The message? The bigger, the better.

The beauty of brushed-out curls is that they're glamorous without feeling too done. Think soft, sweeping waves, plenty of movement and a little lived-in texture, rather than anything overly polished or precise. Plus, brushing through curls helps them blend together, creating the illusion of thicker, fuller hair.

How to get the look

Start by creating curls using a tong or straightener, working in sections and alternating directions for a more natural finish. Once you've curled your whole head, let the hair cool completely – this is key to helping the shape last. If you already have naturally curly, coily or For Afro-textured hair, work with your natural texture, using a twist-out, braid-out or flexi rods to create soft, defined curls that can then be gently separated for a fuller, brushed-out effect.

Then comes the magic: loosening everything up. "Use the Hershesons wide tooth comb and brush through the mid-lengths and ends to shape a flawless, brushed-out curl," says Ryan Wilkes, stylist at our Belgravia salon. For tighter curl patterns, gently separate and fluff the curls with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb instead, to create volume without unnecessary breakage.

The right fnishing products make all the difference, too. "Apply a smoothing heat protection spray and Hershesons Almost Everything Cream  to finish," says Ryan.
