The Simple Guide To Getting A Really Good Bob

The Simple Guide To Getting A Really Good Bob

Thinking of finally getting that bob you’ve been considering for who-knows-how-long? You’re not alone. The bob is timeless – and we cut all manner of different styles in our London salons every day. So what do you need to know before getting one? And how do you make sure what you do get really works for you? Here’s our stylist-approved guide

1. Take reference images

The easiest way to make sure you and your stylist are on the same page? Bring photos. Whether it’s an influencer you’ve saved on Instagram or a celebrity on the red carpet, reference images give a clear starting point for the shape and overall aesthetic you’re drawn to. From there, your stylist can adapt the look to suit your face shape, texture and lifestyle.

2. Pick the right length for you

Not all bobs are chin-length. A great bob can sit anywhere from the jaw to the collarbone – the key is choosing a length that works with your proportions, hair texture and how you actually wear your hair day to day. Shorter can feel graphic and directional, while a longer bob (lob) is softer and easier to tie back.

3. Think about texture and shape

Bring reference photos, but also talk honestly about your natural hair texture. Fine hair often benefits from blunt ends to create the illusion of fullness, while thicker hair usually needs invisible layering to avoid that bulky triangle effect. The goal is always the same: a cut that looks good air-dried, not just after a salon blow-dry.

4. Styling should be as close to effortless as possible

A modern bob isn’t about perfection – it’s about movement. A quick rough dry with a nozzle, a bend with straighteners or a little Zhoosh Foam can make it look intentional. If you need 45 minutes every morning, the cut probably isn’t right.

5. Maintenance matters

Bobs grow out quickly, so plan trims every 6–8 weeks to keep the line sharp. Between appointments, lightweight products are key to avoiding a weighed-down shape – less is usually more. Healthy ends are what make a bob look considered and expensive.

6. Your bob styling kit

Shorter cuts can require a little more daily styling – even when perfectly cut. The trick is having the right products to make it fast and easy. Almost Everything Cream is ideal for smoothing frizz, adding shine and doing (almost) everything. For undone texture, Air Dry Spray is a hero. And for lift and hold, reach for Zhoosh.
