How To Undo A Summer Of Sun, Sea And Sand
Summer is great for almost everything except your hair. Weeks of sun, heat, chlorine, salt water and scraping it back into a bun can leave even healthy hair feeling a little worse for wear come autumn.
If yours is suddenly drier, duller, frizzier or generally harder to handle, now is a good time for a reset. The good news? You probably don’t need to overhaul your entire routine. A few small changes can make a big difference.
Start with a proper clean
Build-up from SPF, sweat and dry shampoo can leave hair looking flat and feeling lacklustre. Start your reset with a thorough shampoo, concentrating on the scalp rather than the ends. If it’s been a while since you’ve given your hair a really good wash, shampoo twice: the first breaks down build-up, while the second cleanses properly.
Get rid of what can’t be saved
If your ends feel rough no matter how much conditioner you apply, it might be time for a trim. Sun, heat and general summer wear and tear tend to show up most obviously at the ends, where hair is oldest and most fragile. Taking off even a small amount can make the whole head of hair look thicker, healthier and more polished.
Put moisture back in
Swap rushed conditioning for something deeply moisturising: apply conditioner or a mask generously through the mid-lengths and ends, then give it a few minutes to work before rinsing. Once you’re out of the shower, Almost Everything Cream can do much of the heavy lifting. Work a small amount through damp hair to smooth, soften and add moisture before styling – or use a tiny amount on dry hair whenever the ends need reviving.
Give the heat a break
If your hair already feels dry, adding more heat isn’t always the answer. Autumn is actually an ideal time to rediscover your natural texture. Apply Air Dry Spray to damp hair, scrunch it in and leave your hair to do its thing. It helps encourage texture and definition without salt, while offering UV protection too. And on the days you do use your tools? Avoid repeatedly going over the same section. Good styling should get the job done efficiently, rather than slowly scorching hair into submission.
Don’t forget your scalp
Healthy-looking hair starts at the scalp, so give yours some attention too. Regular washing is important – particularly if you use lots of dry shampoo or styling products – and a proper scalp massage while you shampoo can help loosen build-up.
