Our top tip to transform the look and feel of curly hair? Set the curl structure before you touch it. A technique often called “hover diffusing,” it changes the way curls are dried – dramatically reducing frizz while improving definition and shine.
Here’s how to do it: apply a curl gel or styling cream, such as Almost Everything Cream, to soaking-wet hair, ensuring the product is evenly distributed. Leave the curls in their natural clumps – no scrunching or manipulation yet. Then, with your diffuser attached, direct the airflow around the hair from a short distance rather than placing sections straight into the bowl. The goal is to allow the curl pattern to begin setting without disturbance.
This step is key because curly hair is most vulnerable to frizz when it’s wet. Traditional diffusing methods that involve early movement can break up curl groupings and create uneven texture. By hovering first, the outer layer of the hair sets smoothly, helping to lock in moisture and definition before any volume is introduced. Once the curls start to dry, they can then be gently lifted into the diffuser to finish drying and add body at the roots.
