How To Get Big, Bouncy Hair With Rollers

If you've spent any time scrolling TikTok or peeking backstage at fashion week, you've probably noticed one beauty tool making a very glamorous return: hair rollers.

Once reserved for your mum's dressing table or old-school salon sets, rollers are officially back – and for good reason. Unlike hot tools that rely on intense heat, rollers create soft, bouncy volume that looks expensive, lasts longer and feels effortless. Think less pageant curls, more '90s supermodel blow dry.

The best part? They're surprisingly easy to use.

Why rollers are so good for volume

Volume isn't just about making hair bigger – it's about creating lift where you need it.

Rollers work by lifting the hair away from the scalp as it cools, giving roots extra height while adding soft body through the mid-lengths and ends. Rather than creating tight curls, larger rollers produce gentle bend, movement and bounce that makes hair appear fuller and healthier.

They're particularly great if your hair tends to fall flat after blow drying. Instead of watching all that hard work disappear within an hour, rollers help your style hold its shape for longer.

Another bonus? Because the volume comes from the way the hair is set rather than from backcombing or excessive product, the finish feels softer, lighter and more natural.

How to use rollers

If you're after easy, everyday volume, here's the simplest method:

Step 1: Start with almost-dry hair

Rollers work best on hair that's around 80-90% dry. If you've just washed your hair, rough dry first, then use a round brush to smooth the sections you want to add volume to.

If you're refreshing second-day hair, lightly mist the roots with Air Dry Spray before using your dryer to reactivate the style.

Step 2: Section your hair

Take sections roughly the same width as your roller. Starting at the crown, lift each section straight up from the head before wrapping it around the roller.

Keeping the hair elevated as you roll is what creates maximum root lift.

Step 3: Roll away from your face

For a classic bouncy blow-dry effect, roll the front sections away from your face. Continue through to the crown before adding rollers to the sides if you'd like extra movement.

Step 4: Let them cool completely

This is the step people skip – and it's the most important. Hair holds its shape once it has cooled, so leave your rollers in until they're completely cold. You can finish your makeup, answer emails or make a coffee while they work their magic. The longer they cool, the longer your volume is likely to last.

Step 5: Remove and brush through

Gently unwind each roller rather than pulling it out. Once they're all removed, flip your head upside down and lightly shake out the roots before brushing through with your fingers. The result should be soft movement, airy lift and glossy bounce rather than defined curls.

Finish with a light mist of hairspray if you want extra hold, keeping the roots touchable and the ends soft.
