Grey Hair? Don’t Make These Mistakes

Whether you’re embracing your greys or just starting to notice a few silver strands coming through, grey hair often needs slightly different treatment. As we age, hair tends to become drier and coarser, while grey strands themselves can feel more wiry and be more vulnerable to environmental damage. The good news? A few simple switches can make a big difference.

Here are the grey hair mistakes worth avoiding.

1. Not moisturising the hair enough

Grey hair can feel drier and more coarse, so moisture is key. Use a good conditioner every time you wash and work a small amount of Almost Everything Cream through damp lengths and ends to soften, smooth and add shine.

2. Overdoing the purple shampoo

Silver hair can develop yellow or brassy tones, and purple shampoo is brilliant for neutralising them – but you don’t necessarily need it at every wash. Overuse can leave hair looking dull or slightly violet, so alternate it with your regular shampoo and use it when your colour actually needs it.

3. Using too much heat

Grey hair can be more fragile, so blasting it with your hottest dryer or repeatedly straightening the same section isn’t ideal. Always use heat protection and turn the temperature down where possible. Even better, embrace your natural texture and air dry occasionally.

4. Forgetting about shine

One of the biggest differences between grey hair that looks dull and grey hair that looks expensive is shine. Hydration helps, but so does avoiding too much dry, powdery styling product. A tiny amount of Almost Everything Cream skimmed over dry hair can help smooth flyaways and add polish without making it greasy.

5. Thinking you have to go short

There’s no rule that says grey hair needs to be cropped. Long, grey hair can look incredible – as can a bob, pixie or anything in between. What matters is a great cut that works with your texture and makes your hair easy to style.

6. Ignoring the cut

Grey hair can have a completely different texture to your previously pigmented hair, so the haircut that worked five years ago may not work in quite the same way now. Rather than fighting the new texture, ask your stylist for a shape that works with it – whether that means adding movement, removing weight or making the most of newfound body.

7. Treating every grey hair the same

Some people go soft silver, others bright white, salt-and-pepper or steely grey – and you may have several different textures on one head. There isn’t one universal “grey hair routine”. Pay attention to what your hair actually needs, rather than what you think grey hair should need.
