Ask Luke: How Can I Protect My Hair From The Sun?

You’ve nailed the perfect beach wave (thanks Multi-Tasker), and stepped into the sunshine well prepped with SPF on your skin. But your hair? It’s soaking up UV rays like a sponge. Fast forward a few days – it's dry, brittle, and your once-glossy colour looks a little… tired. Summer hair needs some help too, which is why we asked Luke for his tips on how we can protect our hair from the sun.

“We don’t always realise it but UV protection is important for healthy hair, so I always recommend using products with built-in UV filters. We just reformulated our Air Dry Spray – which is perfect for creating tousled, beachy texture without the need for heat – to include UV protection. Make it an essential formula in your beauty routine. Simply mist it into the hair liberally, then use your fingers to twist and scrunch for cool girl hair in seconds.

Since the sun can dry out the hair, you might also notice colour fading or a lot of frizz, so make sure you’re using hydrating formulas too. A nourishing mask used once or twice a week can really help fortify the hair and keep it shiny and glossy; our Almost Everything Cream is a brilliant moisturiser, and can be applied to damp hair as a mask, left on for 10 minutes, then washed out.

And then there are physical ways of protecting the hair. Firstly, protective styles, such as braids or plaits, or a slicked bun can work wonders in keeping the hair out of the sun’s way, plus they look great too. Caps and hats are also helpful and work double time, keeping your hair and skin out of the sun, so in really hot climates, I’d recommend taking one.

So while, yes, the sun can damage the hair, there’s no reason 1) not to enjoy it and 2) not to have great hair. Enjoy!
