Can you ever be too old for long hair?

There are many outdated “rules” about how women should wear their hair once they reach 50 – and outdated they should remain. No you don’t need to go for a short crop past a certain age, nor should you avoid growing your hair long – it really doesn’t matter what age you are, great hair is all about self-expression. Always opt for a cut that helps frame your face, brings out the best in your complexion and makes you feel confident, whatever age you are.

You only have to look at the likes of Salma Hayek, Demi Moore, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Sharon Stone and J Lo to know that 50-plus hairstyles don’t automatically spell grey crops. These women experiment regularly with their colour, texture and cut – as well as how hair is styled – to enhance their faces and outfits.

Take Helen Mirren, who is 78 and switches up her hairstyle regularly. In the past couple of years, she’s shown off super long silver hair; a mermaid-blue chignon and a shiny shoulder-length bob (complete with side-parting) on the red carpet. Her hair is as much a statement as her outfit – and from her colour to her various different cuts, she looks great for it.

Not forgetting acting icons, like Michelle Pfeiffer, 65, whose mid-length blonde chop features lived-in roots and tousled ends – a cut that would look just as good on a 25 year-old. Kris Jenner’s (68) deep brunette crop is a flattering way to frame her eyes and gravity-defying jawline. And 55 year-old Naomi Watts’ blunt-cut bob, with hints of silver running through her colour, is low-maintenance but directional in its feel. Put simply, it’s cool.

Like we said, there are no rules. All it takes is an open mind: work with your hairdresser to adapt an appealing cut to your face shape. A good haircut (by a good stylist) can draw the eye towards areas you love, and disguise those you’re not such a fan of, while a good colourist can help you segue into silver or make whatever colour you choose look au naturel.

Oh, and to style it? You need a Great Hairdryer. We’re currently celebrating spring with an exclusive offer on our NEW and improved hairdryer that now comes with a padded travel cube for easy (and chic) storage. Still the lightweight, fast-drying hair tool it’s ever been, save £70 on it now.
